Ada Lea shares brand new single ‘Partner’

Montreal-based singer-songwriter Ada Lea has dropped a brand new single, ‘Partner’.

The slow-burning track lies somewhere in the nebulous area between bedroom pop, folk, hazy ballad, and indie rock. Lea’s voice is breathy and removed, like she’s singing the song in the other room and you’re listening through the wall. That brings a certain intimacy, but also a strange sense of detachment as well, almost as if you’re listening in on something private and personal that isn’t meant to be heard.

Lea’s debut LP, what we say in private, came out back in 2019, and it had one of those origin stories that you can’t help but keep in the back of your mind as you listen to it. A painter in addition to being a singer, Lea’s break up with her partner at the time caused her to paint for 180 days straight. When the emotional weight wasn’t lifted by this excursion, Lea turned to music to interpret the confusion and

As far as I know, one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden doesn’t have that same kind of heavy history surrounding it, but that doesn’t mean Lea has to stop singing about heartbreak. “I sit at the same booth/with tears in my eyes/begging won’t you admit you’re giving up on me too quick.” Man, she just can’t catch a break, can she?

“[‘Partner’ is] a song about moving through a memory… an involuntary memory that steals up on you the night after a rager (which takes place the morning after the song ‘damn’),” Lea explains in a press release. She’s an artist who seems to be big on themes and concepts: one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden is apparently explicitly arranged for each of the songs to divide into a specific season. No word on which season ‘partner’ corresponds with, but I’m guessing it’s probably not summer.
