American indie supergroup Big Red Machine have released ‘Phoenix’, a new single featuring Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold and Bonny Light Horseman’s Anaïs Mitchell.

It’s somewhat bizarre to consider a duo a “supergroup”, but just based solely on the collection of collaborators that core members Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon, of The National and Bon Iver, respectively, bring in for each subsequent song, it’s hard not to key into the superstar status of the project.

Just look at the band’s last single, ‘Renegade’, featuring little-known up and comer Taylor Swift on vocals, with whom Vernon and Dessner have collaborated extensively with in the past. ‘Renegade’ is one of two tracks from the project’s upcoming LP How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? to feature Swift, and the rest of the album’s lineup isn’t lacking in talent either: Sharon Van Etten, Ben Howard, Lisa Hannigan, La Force, and Naeem, just to name a few.

Anyway, back to ‘Phoenix’. Because Big Red Machine is mostly a folky/indie-pop project, it only makes sense that Pecknold, the leader of the biggest band in the world that sounds like it’s made up exclusively of Hobbits, would get involved sooner or later. Pecknold brings his gentle coo to the tumbling rhythms and joyously vibrant piano lines of ‘Phoenix’, and no one can convince me that this isn’t actually a Fleet Foxes outtake.

‘Phoenix’ is the second Big Red Machine song to feature Anaïs Mitchell, who admittedly, gets less to do here than on her first previous collaboration ‘Latter Days’, but the way that Mitchell blends her voice with Pecknold’s and Vernon’s is still quite beautiful and impactful. It’s another wonderfully folky cut from an album that is shaping up to sound like it’s being beamed directly from a cottage in the woods.

Check out the video for ‘Phoenix’ down below. How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? will be released on August 27.
