British-American singer/songwriter Celeste has dropped a new video for her track ‘Tonight Tonight’, the third track from her debut LP Not Your Muse.
Not to get too off topic, but I was secretly hoping that this would be a stealth Smash Pumpkins cover or maybe even a piss-take on that Hot Chelle Rae song from back in 2011. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. That’s alright, because Celeste’s ‘Tonight Tonight’ is pretty great all on its own.
Bridging disparate elements of R&B, pop, and soul, Celeste creates a sound all her own through the descending minor chord progression show employs on ‘Tonight Tonight’. If my ears don’t deceive me, it’s a fairly standard i-VII-VI-V progression, the kind that just about anyone writing in a minor key will tend to gravitate towards, but Celeste layers an absolutely lovely melody over the top to keep the song from appearing cliched or common.
That’s something that Celeste excels at: taking sounds you’ve heard before and twisting them around into something completely unique. Not so experimental that she gravitates away from appealing to a mass audience, but more detail-oriented than the average pop star, Celeste winds you through a wholly unexpected journey throughout the runtime of Not Your Muse, with ‘Tonight Tonight’ being just one of many memorable tracks.
Bursting on to the new music scene with the 2019 single ‘Strange’, Celeste has been building momentum for a solid two years, unencumbered by global pandemics or modern music trends. She cuts a singular figure, not afraid to work around genre and form with a freedom that most artists would be envious of. The name of the game is always establishing a signature style, but Celeste seems more interested in not being held down or easily labeled.
