Elton John to release 32nd studio album

It has been announced that Elton John will release a new collaborative album, The Lockdown Sessions, featuring a range of artists, including Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, and Eddie Vedder.

The Rocketman’s 32nd studio album was recorded over the last 18 months and will drop on October 22nd. The project is a product of John being forced to cancel his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement, John described the album’s serendipitous origins: “The last thing I expected to do during lockdown was make an album,” he said, adding: “But, as the pandemic went on, one‐off projects kept cropping up.” The Lockdown Sessions comprises 16 tracks – 10 of which are new or previously unreleased songs. It is a celebration of community in a time of isolation and sees John collaborate with everyone from Miley Cyrus and Young Thug to Yo-Yo Ma and Stevie Wonder.

Describing how the album came together, John said: “Some of the recording sessions had to be done remotely, via Zoom, which I’d obviously never done before. Some of the sessions were recorded under very stringent safety regulations: working with another artist, but separated by glass screens. But all the tracks I worked on were really interesting and diverse, stuff that was completely different to anything I’m known for, stuff that took me out of my comfort zone into completely new territory.”

Strangely, the process reminded John of the way recording sessions worked back in the 1960s. He said, “At the start of my career, in the late ’60s, I worked as a session musician. Working with different artists during lockdown reminded me of that. I was a session musician again. And it was still a blast.”

The Lockdown Sessions will be available from October 22nd and you can pre-order a copy by following this link.
