Norwegian indie rock queen Marie Ulven Ringheim, better known to the world as Girl In Red, has released a new video for the song ‘Body and Mind’.
‘Body and Mind’ was the third track on Ringheim’s debut studio LP If I Could Make It Go Quiet released earlier this year. We spent some time gushing about If I Could Make It Go Quiet before, so I’m sure a little more won’t hurt anybody.
This track wasn’t one we specifically singled out in our review, but it is one of the only album tracks not explicitly taking cues from either indie rock or bedroom pop. Instead, ‘Body and Mind’ plays more like a modern version of a dubstep song, complete with a thumping processed beat and explosive electronic chorus. As the song trips and trills along, you can almost feel the exact moment when you get transported back to 2010. I can’t tell if Ringheim is making fun of Imagine Dragons or was genuinely influenced by Imagine Dragons, but the musical similarities pretty quickly made ‘Body and Soul’ my least favourite cut on If I Could Make It Go Quiet.
Thankfully, I’ve come around since then, with the song’s ear wormy hook driving itself straight into my brain and staying there. Whether it’s true or not, I enjoy the song more when I believe that Girl In Red is parodying the unfortunate time in music history when Skrillex was a major reference point, but I also have to contend with the fact that Ringheim is so young that there’s a distinct possibility of there being no irony at all involved here. I’m talking like she’s a child compared to me even though we’re only sixth months apart in age, but my demeanour is pretty well established as a cantankerous crackpot trapped in a relatively young body. Ringheim is cool, I’m an old man.
Anyway, I didn’t say a single goddamn word about the video. That’s probably for the best. Let’s just say it’s a slow burn with a fiery conclusion.
