Iron Butterfly drummer Ron Bushy dead at 79

The drummer for the band Iron Butterfly, Ron Bushy, has died at the age of 79.

The band revealed the news via a Facebook status that read: “Ron Bushy our beloved legendary drummer of Iron Butterfly has passed away peacefully, with his wife Nancy by his side, at 12:05 am on August 29th at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital.”

Adding: “All three of his daughters were also with him. He was a real fighter. He was born Dec 23, 1941. He will be deeply missed!”

The cause of death was revealed to be oesophageal cancer, which the musician battled against for a long time.

Bushy joined the pioneering acid rock band back in 1966 and remained with them until 1977 having drummed on all of their six studio albums. Bushy later re-joined the band on several occasions for a. few tours as they continued to play live with a revolving cast of band members.

Bushy will also be remembered for his rolling drum solo on the iconic 17-minute epic ‘In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida’. The track was revolutionary in that it actually received radio play, thus inspiring the likes of Pink Floyd and other psychedelic acts who followed by showing that trance-like anthems also had commercial viability.
