Johnny Marr teases exciting new music

Britain’s finest axeman, Johnny Marr, has shared a teaser of new music, getting audiences excited that new music is on the way imminently. Given the pandemic and all, the former Smiths and Cribs man’s last studio album came in the form of 2018’s Call The Comet.

Prior to his 2018 offering, Marr also gave us his second album Playland in 2014, and his debut, The Messenger, in 2013. This exciting teaser follows on from massive news that Marr shared earlier this month. He revealed that he’s signed a new worldwide album contract with music publisher BMG. It seems as if the new music he’s teased will be from a forthcoming album as part of the deal.

Marr took to Twitter to reveal the news. Yesterday (August 26), he wrote: “I’m back… we’re back. New music. Let’s go”. The Tweet accompanied the new teaser, which featured an ’80s electronic drum beat and visuals of Marr turning the knobs on a drum machine, this possibly hints to a more experimental or electronic feel that the new music will explore.

Marr is currently working on new music in the studio and is set to play a string of intimate tour dates across the UK in September. Those shows will acts as a warm-up of sorts for his support slot at the Courteeners’ sold-out hometown show at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester on September 25.

The new music is Marr’s first since 2019. His last singles were ‘The Bright Parade’ and ‘Armatopia’. The latter was a disco-influenced tune, concerned with the ecological and environmental crisis the world finds itself in.

Director of the ‘Armatopia’ video, Kris Rimmer, said: “Johnny and I wanted to work with the idea that even when the future of a person seems bleak and uncertain, they can still choose to pursue pleasure and self-indulgence. In this case, that hedonism is embodied in our four main characters.”

He explained, “We chose the derelict tower block to contrast their eccentricities and followed them on a journey to “the last place on earth left open”. There seems to be something quite significant about finding romance in the last days of existence.”
