Julien Baker set to release ‘Little Oblivion’ remix EP

American singer-songwriter Julien Baker has announced her new EP, Little Oblivions Remixes. The record will feature a set of reworked tracks from her 2021 album Little Oblivions by the likes of Half Waif, Gordi, Jesu, and Thao. Along with the announcement, Baker has also released ambient producer Helios’ remix of the Little Oblivions track, ‘Bloodshot’.

Helios, in a recent statement, discussed how the track came together and described the process of reworking the track, calling it: “One of the most fun remixes I’ve done to date”.

“I was excited when Julien Baker reached out about doing a remix, because I respect her work and it was an interesting challenge to do a remix of singer/songwriter material in the context of my approach which is more in the electronic/ambient world,” Helios wrote, adding: “I wanted to keep the integrity of the original composition, which was great, but also wanted to create enough of a spin to give it a distinctly new quality.”

Baker’s album Little Oblivions was released back in February via Matador. Since then, Baker herself has been reworking the album, reinterpreting one of her own original songs. In July, Baker re-recorded ‘Little Faith’ for the video game Sims 4, singing the lyrics in Simlish. The song was also released alongside a Simlish rendition of ‘Hot & Heavy’ by Lucy Dacus of Boygenius.

Little Oblivions built on Baker’s talent as a natural storyteller, as well as a multi-instrumentalist. Since the release of Boygenius‘ self-titled 2018 EP – in which she plays alongside Pheobe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus – Baker has become something of a spokesperson for a generation of young people growing up gay in the US.

Her previous works have been characterised by the barest smatterings of piano and guitar, leaving room for Baker’s voice and lyrics to shine through. But Little Oblivions allowed Baker to experiment with a full band sound, and this EP of reworked tracks would seem to imply that Baker has intentions of persuing more expansive sounds in the future. Baker is set to tour the UK in 2022.
