Kacey Musgraves announces new album

American country star Kacey Musgraves has announced the details for her upcoming fifth studio album. Star-Crossed, the follow up to her phenomenal 2018 LP Golden Hour, will be released in September.

Musgraves has been teasing the new album for a while now. The thing is, however, those teases very rarely came with any actual music. Descriptions of the album as a “three part Greek tragedy” concerning her divorce from fellow country star Ruston Kelly and the LP containing sonic reference points like Weezer, Daft Punk, Sade, and Bill Withers. When she appeared Dr. Maya Shankar’s podcast A Slight Change Of Plans a few weeks ago, she sang a cappella snippets of a few new songs, but no finished recordings.

That changes today with the release of the album’s title track. Much like Wolf Alice did with Blue Weekend, Musgraves has created an entire film around the album. That film, helpfully ellipsed as Star-Crossed: The Film, will premiere on Paramount+ the same day its parent album is released. When it was mentioned earlier that she had been teasing the new work, it turns out that she was working on a lot of new material.

Admittedly, Far Out has a bit of a rock bent, so why would a British culture magazine care about an American country musician? Well, for one, Musgraves’ version of country liberally incorporates elements of psychedelia, pop, rock and roll, disco, and soul into her signature sound. Two, for anyone averse to the twang and stereotypical lyrical focuses of country music, Musgraves comfortable resides outside the traditional stylistic confines of Nashville. Three, this new album is apparently also inspired by the Eagles, for anyone needing any classic county rock appeasement. And four, I just really like her music.

Check out the audio for ‘star-crossed’, plus the accompanying film’s trailer, down below. Star-Crossed is set for a September 10 release date.
