Australia’s favourite psychedelic rockers, King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard, have released a video for their new song ‘Yours’.
The song is featured as the leadoff track on their latest release Butterfly 3000. The band recently announced plans to release a brand new video for each of the album’s ten tracks.
The video is directed by frequent collaborator John Angus Stewart, who has been behind the camera for a number of previous King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard videos including ‘RATTY’ and ‘Organ Farmer’.
Melbourne, the band’s hometown, is the main setting of the video. Band members explore various venues around the city, including spots like the Melbourne Aquarium, clubs like the Rooftop Bar and The Bottom End, and the Eureka 89 skyscraper restaurant.
‘Yours’ is fairly conventional, at least as far as King Gizzard songs go. A driving synth-pop number built upon an easily hummable melody, the song sees the collective take a step back from the wild experimentation and wacky sounds that can sometimes take over their work. No microtonal guitars, no polyrhythms or insane time signatures, just a bubbly blast of fun from down under.
Oddly enough, ‘Yours’ finds King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard in a supremely stripped back mode, operating at less than half capacity as a power trio on the track. Featuring only drummer Michael Cavanagh, who is planning on releasing a solo album at the end of the month, plus multi-instrumentalists Stu Mackenzie and Ambrose Kenny-Smith, ‘Yours’ proves that the nebulous free-flowing nature of King Gizzard is what remains vital to their survival. As a band with such a prolific output, it only makes sense that certain songs don’t have to feature every single member. ‘Yours’ sounds full and lively even as most of the band are missing.
