At a time when live music remains a somewhat distant memory amid the current health crisis, fans have been forced to find new ways to get their music fix during life within a pandemic. While Billie Eilish plots a return for her previously cancelled worldwide tour, we are building excitement during the period of flux with a closer focus on her remarkable vocal delivery.

Eilish ruled 2019 and, before the pandemic struck, it looked as though 2020 was shaping up to be the year of Eilish again after kicking off the year with her sublime James Bond theme ‘No Time To Die’. With ‘Bad Guy’, one of the songs that solidified her position as a rising star in the world of pop music, the young singer’s artistry and unique qualities come to the fold. That said, this version of the track, featuring Eilish’s vocals only, gives it an extra sense of mystery.

Here, through audio exploring the isolated vocal range of Eilish’s Grammy Award-winning hit song, we get an understanding of her unique approach to music creation. The track, which was written alongside her brother and collaborator Finneas, was released as the fifth single from Eilish’s debut studio album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? and was confirmed as critical and commercial success.

“It’s like, ‘OK if you’re gonna be that then I’m gonna be all types of fake too’,” Eilish said in an interview with Rolling Stone when discussing ‘Bad Guys’ inspiration. “Great, I’m the bad type, the make your momma sad type, make your girlfriend mad type—which I’m not that, but if you can be fake with everyone and try to prove that you’re something that you’re not then I can do it too.”

She added: “I had been inspired by this song called ‘Never’ by JID and this song called ‘Stuck In The Mud’ by Isaiah Rashad that kind of stop for like five seconds in the middle and then start this new song that’s shorter. I thought it was so interesting.”
