Movie Club release driving new single ‘Trap Door’

Instrumental psych-rock duo Movie Club have previewed their upcoming EP Fangtooth with the new single ‘Trap Door’.

Instrumental psychedelic rock, on the surface, seems like a tough sell. Music without vocals, when divorced from its more well-known homes of classical concert halls and or movie soundtracks, could perhaps seem lacking or missing a vital element that helps translate it to more mainstream audiences.

The reality, however, is that instrumental music has a strong and highly influential presence in popular music. Dick Dale’s ‘Miserlou’, The Shadows’ ‘Apache’, Booker T & the MG’s ‘Green Onions’ and The Champs’ ‘Tequila’ are just a few of the foundational and phenomenally popular songs that didn’t require singing to become hits.

‘Trap Door’ is in that same proud tradition, with a touch of harder-edged psychedelia to fill the spaces that a lead singer might fill. With driving rhythms and sonic swirls of guitar, ‘Trap Door’ feels fleshed out and fully realised.

‘Trap Door’ comes packaged with a music video that references the 1956 French comedy-drama The Red Balloon. To shoot some of the video’s scenes, the band waded out into the murky waters of the Salton Sea in California, where the viscous liquid can often appear more like toxic sludge.

“We definitely went far outside of our comfort zone making this video,” says guitarist Vince Cuneo. “I don’t know how to describe crawling into the Salton Sea, but there was a moment where I thought that I physically wasn’t going to be able to go through with it.”

“Bombay Beach feels like where Burning Man festival goes for the other 50 weeks of the year,” drummer Jessamyn Violet adds. “There are so many captivating builds, trippy statues and signs. It’s like nowhere else on the planet.”
