Mr Jukes and Barney Artist have served up a heavenly delight as they continue to tease their upcoming collaborative album with their heart-melting new single, Gratitude.
Bombay Bicycle Club singer Jack Steadman first emerged under his jazzy persona, Mr Jukes, in 2017 with his debut album, God First. His first record saw him collaborate with an array of illustrious names, including De La Soul, Lianne La Havas, and Steadman also had the honour of working with Charles Bradley on the final track released before his death.
It looked like when Bombay Bicycle Club called an end to their hiatus that it would spell the end for Mr Jukes, but he re-emerged earlier this year as part of a double act with London hip-hop sensation Barney Artist. Remarkably, the duo are even supporting Bombay Bicycle Club tomorrow night in Northampton as Steadman does double duty.
The two artists share a wonderful chemistry, and it’s clear Steadman prefers to operate with other people than as a solo musician in the traditional sense. ‘Gratitude’ is a warm track, optimism seeps out of its every pore, and the gospel backing vocals add an additional layer of wholesomeness to the effort.
Speaking about the track, Mr Jukes says: “It was quite fitting that we recorded this song – which samples a wonderful gospel singer called Pastor T. L. Barrett – in my old bedroom which overlooked an old church. Barney was looking for the right words and I suggested he take a walk around the churchyard. He came back with the whole second verse.”
Every release from the duo so far is anticipation for The Locket – due to be shared on August 6th – has been hopeful, and it feels like the sort of peaceful respite we all deserve after the last year.
‘Gratitude’ does it says on the box and offers a momentary escape from all the noise outside. The Locket won’t revolutionalise the world, but it’s shaping up to be a beautiful distraction.
