Everyone has done a cover of ‘Creep’, the inescapable first hit from scrappy Oxfordshire up and comers Radiohead that just won’t die. Tears for Fears did it. Kelly Clarkson did it. A million hacky YouTuber’s took a swing at it. Prince did it at Coachella in 2008, and hilariously tried to block the performance from appearing online, even though, you know, it’s not his song. Thom Yorke, seizing his subversive opportunity, defended ‘Creep’ for what is almost assuredly the first and only time, demanding the video be allowed to stay up. Now there’s actually a few different videos of the performance, and no doubt The Purple One is rolling in his plush satin grave.

But like I said: everyone has done ‘Creep’. I’ve done ‘Creep’, you’ve done ‘Creep’. Your version is probably on Spotify right now and you didn’t even know it. Guitars are always tuned to the key of ‘Creep’. It is the phoenix of alt-rock: burning itself down in a fiery, angst-filled blaze, only to rise from the cultural ashes each and every time. It will never die.

mxmtoon at least has a cool reason to cover ‘Creep’: She’s the singing voice for Alex Chen, the protagonist in the new video game Life is Strange: True Colors. And truly, what is a moody piece of media without a slow-dirge remake of a pop song in the background?

Also cool is that it appears the developers have stitched together some footage from the game to make a music video, showing the main character of Alex playing the guitar in a record store interspersed with live-action footage of mxmtoon parsing through records as well.

The more I learn about Life is Strange: True Colors, the weirder it gets. It’s about a girl with superpowers? But those superpowers are *checks notes* absorbing and manipulating the emotions of others? And she’s using those powers to investigate a small town murder mystery? And the soundtrack has Phoebe Bridgers on it?

If this sounds like your bag, the video game is available for pre-order now. Check out the video for ‘Creep’ down below.
