Saint Etienne announce new album ‘I’ve Been Trying To Tell You’

English indie pop institution Saint Etienne have released details for their upcoming tenth studio album, I’ve Been Trying To Tell You.

Saint Etienne are dance-pop lifers, originally coming up in the early ’90s indie rave scene that still featured some of the last remnants of baggy before big beat came around and took over. The evolution of the English dance genre is fascinating, especially from an outsiders perspective. Here in America, it’s far more fragmented and regional, but the UK seems to have a much broader and more thoroughly detailed progression.

Saint Etienne was formed when two music journalists, Pete Wiggs and Bob Stanley, decided they had enough good taste to put together a solid musical project all their own. I can confirm that every single music journalist has this thought at some point in their career, usually as they’re sifting through hordes of new music and find that they don’t actually like any of it. The group was set to have a rotating cast of singers, but vocalist Sarah Cracknell made such a strong impression that she was kept on full time.

The trio shared announced the new record on their Instagram page, and also shared that the album will come in conjunction with an accompanying film directed by photographer Alasdair McLellan.

Describing the themes of the new album, Stanley explains that, “To me it’s about optimism, and the nineties, and how memory is an unreliable narrator. Pete and Gus have done a properly amazing production job. I think it sounds gorgeous.”

Meanwhile, Cracknell describes the new release as being primarily sample-focused. “It’s the first sample-driven album we’ve made since [1993’s] So Tough and it’s been a really refreshing experience, such fun! It’s both dreamy and atmospheric, late summer sounds.”

I’ve Been Trying To Tell You is set for a September 10 release. The accompanying film will premiere at BFI Southbank on September 3.
