Norwegian synth-pop artist Sigrid has released her second single of 2021 with the highly danceable new song ‘Burning Bridges’.
“[‘Burning Bridges’ is] inspired by one of the toughest things I’ve been through,” Sigrid explains in a press release. “It’s a song that’s about the point where you just have to say in a relationship, ‘you know what, let’s just finish this’. That moment of enough is enough, and you need a clean break.”
I’ll be completely honest: dance-pop isn’t exactly my style. You’d sooner find me in a dentist’s chair getting a root canal than in a club on the dance floor, but that has more to do with my utter inability to either dance or look cool than it does with the music.
But credit where credit is due, Sigrid might be converting me over. Her last single, ‘Mirror’, was equally entrancing in both fully arranged electronic form and as a piano ballad. Never one to mess around with too much extraneous composition, Sigrid loves to get right to the point and hit you right between the eyes with excitement and catchy melodies.
On the flip side, I’m sad to report that this is not, in fact, a cover of Pink Floyd’s trippy acid rock ballad of the same name from Obscured by Clouds. It is also not a subject-flipped cover of Foo Fighters’ ‘Bridge Burning’, sadly. I probably didn’t need to tell you I’m not a club music kind of guy since you would have figured it out by those two Dinosaur Rock references I just made. The ID says 23, but the taste in music says grandpa.
Anyway, last time we talked about Sigrid, I said that “if any future releases are as positively upbeat and indelibly catchy as ‘Mirror’, it will be an incredibly exciting listen.” Well, guess what that makes ‘Burning Bridges’? Yup, that’s right: an incredibly exciting listening experience. No word yet on when the follow up to her great 2019 debut Sucker Punch is coming out, but the first two singles are knockouts, so I’m feeling the anticipation already.
