St. Vincent to stage first-ever virtual live concert

American indie icon St. Vincent has announced that she is staging her first-ever virtual live concert, ‘Down and Out Downtown’, in support of her latest studio album Daddy’s Home.

“‘Down And Out Downtown’ is a sepia-toned tour de force of gritty grooves, hungover glamour and spellbinding musicality,” the concert’s synopsis reads. “From rollicking full band rave-ups to delicate acoustic interludes, ‘Down And Out Downtown’ brings the 70s-inspired sensibilities of Daddy’s Home to life in a celebration of unforgettable songs and peerless musicians.”

Seemingly falling in line with the gritty and nostalgic sensibilities of its parent album, ‘Down and Out Downtown’ will feature new arrangements of album cuts as well as songs from St. Vincent’s back catalogue. It’s hard to imagine how tracks from the plastic electronica of Masseduction or the art pop of Marry Me would fit the funky style of Daddy’s Home, but it will be exciting to find out. Maybe we’ll get a wah-wah version of ‘Regret’, or all three parts of the Johnny Trilogy, or maybe even a revved-up take on ‘Now, Now’.

Annie Clark is keeping busy with preparations for real-life, in-person, non-virtual concerts as well. There are American legs in the fall of 2021 and European legs in the summer of 2022 for the Daddy’s Home tour, extending Clark’s ’70s pastiche aesthetic for at least another year. The modern-day David Bowie changes guises and styles with every new album cycle, and Daddy’s Home is just starting to peak with Clark’s new persona.

Clark’s backing band for the concert will include Justin Meldal-Johnsen (bass), Jason Falkner (guitar), Rachel Eckroth (keys), Mark Guiliana (drums), and backing vocalists Nayanna Holley, Sy Smith and Neka Hamilton, the same musicians who have been making promotional appearances with Clark and will likely be the St. Vincent touring band for the next year.
