Supergrass announce ‘In It For The Money’ reissue

Recently reformed Britpop legends Supergrass have shared details for a new expanded edition of their second LP In It For the Money.

Originally recorded as Britpop was showing signs of strain, In It For The Money is a kickback at the youthful abandon of the band’s debut I Should Coco. Famously, the band were pitched a Monkees-type television show by Stephen Spielberg at the same time, who observed the band’s antics in the ‘Alright’ music video, and chose instead to work on In It For The Money instead.

Along with its deliberately ironic title, the song’s on In It For The Money no longer found the group focusing on teenage drug busts or alluding to quaaludes between cuts. Instead, the band aimed for a more mature and focused dynamic to separate it from the ragged charm of I Should Coco. The results were less immediately satisfying, but have aged far better than anyone might have expected.

The new expanded edition of the album is set to include a 12 inch ‘Sun Hits The Sky (Bentley Rhythm Ace Remix)’ / ‘The Animal’ single, and two CDs of B- Sides, Rarities, Outtakes & Live Tracks, many of which have never been released. In total, the release will be a three CD, 53 track collection.

In It For The Money was the essential stepping stone for the band to take that allowed them to last as long as they did. Bringing on Gas Coombe’s brother Rob as a fully-fledged member, the album’s introspective musings and palpable defiance of the band’s brash and anarchic past work meant that they didn’t have to pretend to be kids forever.

Supergrass managed to put together five albums after In It For The Money before breaking up in 2010. The band reunited at Glastonbury in 2019.

In It For The Money (Remastered Expanded Edition will be released on August 27. Check out an early version of album cut ‘It’s Not Me’ down below.
