The Reytons share new single ‘Expectations of a Fool’

The Reytons – ‘Expectations of a Fool’

The Reytons, otherwise known as the pride of South Yorkshire, have released the brand new single ‘Expectations of a Fool’.

Another great scruffy indie rocker, ‘Expectations of a Fool’ is as dynamic and explosive as any of the band’s previous material, from its bass-driven verses to its in-your-face choruses chastising the subject for being a little too understanding: “What did you expect/You’re bending over backwards just to break your crooked neck.”

“We’re really looking forward to the album,” the band explain in a press release, “Not just because it’s our debut, but because the release date (24th Sep) marks the start of our tour and we can go back to doing what we love! ‘Expectations of a Fool’ is the second single with a totally different vibe to what we’ve released in the past.”

Maybe because it’s less directly indebted to punk rock, or maybe because it’s got a slicker production style compared to the ragged DIY of the band’s earlier material, but the “different vibe” here is a little more cleaned up than before. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of sheen and shine, as long as the song is still quality.

Thankfully, ‘Expectations of a Fool’ retains the necessary punch and power for the band to get a little poppier. Anyone that rhymes “ghost” with “periscope” is fine by me, and The Reytons seems to be getting better and better even as they continue to sand down their rougher edges.

On the other hand, I’m at least somewhat suspicious that the band’s PR people included their upcoming tour dates on the song’s press release just to show off the fact that most of them are sold out. I’ll include them all because I’m comfortable being complicit in perpetuating the humblebrags that come with notes like “venue upgrade”. Those bastards.
