Zuzu announces debut album and shares new single ‘My Old Life’

    Zuzu – ‘My Old Life’

Zuzu has finally shared details of her debut album and accompanied the announcement with her new single, ‘My Old Life’.

The Liverpool singer-songwriter has looked close to home for her album title, Queensway Tunnel, which is the road that runs under the River Mersey, and also happens to be the location of her latest single. Zuzu has been a name that has been swirling around for a few years now, and on November 12th, her first full body of work will finally arrive.

‘My Old Life’ sees us find the singer in a state of despair at the end of a relationship as she takes the listener on a late-night drive across Merseyside as a stream of consciousness flows out of her. On the anthemic chorus, she sings: “So I drove my car to the edge of the Mersey, I threw my phone saying you don’t deserve me, On yet another starless night, I kiss goodbye to my old life.”

Commenting on the song, Zuzu said: “This last 18 months have brought about some of the biggest changes in my life. I’ve had to learn how to set boundaries. Learn how to walk away from people and how to let people walk away from me.”

Zuzu continued: “This song is about a particular period I had to dig really deep to find enough self-worth to move on from an emotionally exhausting situation that — at the time — felt like the end of the world. It’s about pushing through those dark times and coming out stronger and wiser. Writing ‘My Old Life’ really helped me to shake off all of the toxic energy I was holding onto and truly let go.”

It’s admiring how Zuzu doesn’t try to hide her accent, which makes for a refreshing change from hearing Brits sing with that all-too-familiar Transatlantic twang. Unfortunately, it’s an all too rare trait to embrace, and Zuzu shows there’s nothing wrong with staying true to yourself.

‘My Old Life’ is filled with passion, and her vocal delivery is searing. After a relatively quiet 2020, Zuzu is firmly back with this incandescent effort and attesting that she was worth the initial hype surrounding her pre-pandemic.
